I was heading home from the gym yesterday afternoon when I noticed a horse on the other side of the fence along the road.  He had his head contorted in all sorts of ways to eat a little bit of tall grass on the other side of the fence.  I looked over to the pasture he was in with other horses and noticed all of them were eating the tall grass within the fence just fine.

Let’s be honest, sometimes we humans are just like that horse. We have what we need to survive and thrive, yet we’re always eyeing that grass on the other side of the fence. We contort ourselves in all sorts of ways just to get a taste of what we think is better.

Was that little bit of grass on the other side of the fence better than the rest in the pasture?  I doubt it.

Was that for us on the other side of the fence better than what we had and where we were in life?  I doubt it.

For some reason, the fruit seems like it will be better and sweeter just on the other side of the fence when in reality, there is no difference. The difference is simply our perspective because we believe that because it is on the other side of the fence, it is sweeter and better.

I am sure some of you, like me, have crossed the fence because the grass was surely greener and better on the other side.  When we got to the other side, we realized it was the same grass just on the other side of the fence.

My challenge to each of us is simply to remember that trying to get a nibble of the same grass on the other side of the fence can come with risks that may never need to be taken.  Sometimes we can get cut by crossing the fence, we can get stuck on the fence, and even worse, once we cross the fence we may realize there is no crossing back over to where we were.

Be certain why you are crossing the fence before you make the attempt.
