A couple of weeks ago in Sunday school, we were having a discussion about the reasons people attend Sunday school or church. The question came up: Are we there for show or to grow?

I believe that’s a question that applies not only to church, but to so many other areas of our lives.

Are we showing up at the gym just to be seen, or to grow physically healthier?

Are we showing up to volunteer because it looks good on a résumé, or because we want to grow our love for helping others?

Are we showing up to hear, watch, or read things that improve our mental conditioning, or are we actually putting those things into practice so we can grow?

When we simply show up, it’s often for outward appearance, and it doesn’t do much for our inward growth. The beautiful thing about internal growth is that the more we grow on the inside, the more it naturally reveals itself on the outside.

My challenge to each of us this week is to ask ourselves the simple question I’ve begun asking myself often:

“Am I here for show or to grow?”

What is your honest answer?
