This Christmas was the first Christmas, Kim and I didn’t have our kids home on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Our kids are older and their families are growing so we decided to start having Christmas with them the weekend before Christmas every year.
Christmas Eve arrived, and I mentioned to Kim that since our tradition of having the kids home on Christmas Eve had changed, we needed to start a new tradition for her and me. Kim loves to look at Christmas lights, so I suggested we go out to eat for an early dinner and then drive around to look at Christmas lights. She loved the idea, and a new tradition on Christmas Eve began.
Oftentimes we allow the sadness of the past to steal our joy for today. Kim and I got to see our kids all together and in one place for Christmas. It doesn’t have to be the exact day because we enjoyed our time together just as much on a Saturday as we would have on a Wednesday.
Traditions change that we once loved and sometimes miss but we should not let that stop us from starting new traditions that bring us joy for today.
I challenge each of us to stop letting sadness or disappointment from the past steal our joy for today. Joy is something we get to choose. Choose joy just for today, and when tomorrow comes, you can decide what you want to choose.
Today is what we have and cannot get back so let’s choose joy for just today.
Your Friend,
Aaron
