Good Morning, Friends!!
Each day on the way to M2B Fitness, I pass a car detailing business. There are usually several cars out front waiting to be washed and detailed inside and out. The ones that are already finished are sitting off to the side, looking shiny and new.
I have to be a little transparent and honest — when I pass by, I often have a question pop into my head out of simple curiosity.
If we are willing to spend hundreds of dollars to make our vehicles look good on the outside, are we spending the same time or money on ourselves on the inside?
I think that oftentimes we work hard to make everything look clean and shiny on the outside, while all the while our inside is a mess. We treat it like the junk drawer at home — we stuff it full, shove it closed, and hide it so no one sees what’s inside.
We will spend more time and money making everything on the outside look just right so others won’t see what we have going on within.
After almost 20 years of training clients of all ages, genders, professions, economic levels, beliefs, and physical abilities, let me share a little secret: everyone has those junk drawers they want to shove closed so no one sees what’s inside. Sure, they all look different, but they’re still junk drawers in our lives — places we’d rather hide than show.
So instead, we try to make everything on the outside look more appealing than what’s going on inside. It’s kind of like a magic trick — “look over here” so you won’t notice what’s really happening somewhere else.
My challenge to each of us isn’t necessarily to leave our life junk drawer open for all to see, but to understand that every one of us has one. Don’t be fooled, and don’t think you’re fooling others with magic tricks. Life can’t be shiny and clean all the time.
Just like our vehicles — we get them detailed and looking great, and before long there’s more dirt inside and out. Before we know it, it’s time to clean it again.
We’re no different.
Life can be dirty and messy, and sometimes — just sometimes — it’s okay to drive around with a little dirt for others to see.
Your friend,
Aaron
