This past weekend, my parents celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary!
Sitting down this morning to write, I began thinking about my parents and their 61 years together. Of course, I haven’t been around for all those 61 years, but I reflected and made some assumptions about their last 61 years together.
How does a married couple stay together for as long as my parents have?
Like between any two people, married couples experience conflict, misunderstanding, disagreement, celebrations, joy, safety, and so much more.
How did my parents manage through all those years with times of conflict, misunderstanding, disagreement, and aggravation?
The answer would seem simple, but when put into practice, the answer takes work.
The anwer…Communication.
Communication is a key foundation not only in marriage but in almost every aspect of life.
Good, clear communication can turn potential conflicts into resolutions. It can turn misunderstandings into understanding. It can turn disagreements into agreements. It can change the way we interact with others.
I challenge each of us to become better at communication, including becoming a better listener and a better speaker. Both can be challenging, so I always encourage baby steps. No matter where we may be in becoming a better communicator, there is always room for baby steps.
Take one baby step today towards better communication.

Aaron
